What we see in Quinte West homes
Quinte West is the closest of our service areas and we are there most weeks. It is also the least uniform: the municipality took in Trenton, Frankford, Batawa and a large stretch of rural Sidney and Murray townships, and each of those has completely different housing.
Trenton itself has an older core near the mouth of the Trent River, with housing going back to the nineteenth century — the same knob-and-tube and 60 amp service questions that come up on Belleville's older streets.
Then there is the effect of the air base. 8 Wing Trenton drove a great deal of residential construction from the 1950s onward, and whole streets of compact post-war and 1960s family housing went up to accommodate it. That era is the sweet spot for two things: 100 amp services that are now undersized for a modern household, and aluminum branch wiring in anything built or rewired between the mid 1960s and the mid 1970s.
Base housing turnover also means a lot of these homes have changed hands frequently, and frequent turnover tends to mean layers of partial renovation. We open a lot of panels in Trenton that show three different decades of workmanship in one box.
Out in the rural parts of Sidney and Murray, the picture changes again: detached garages and workshops, wells, longer driveways, and a genuine case for a generator transfer switch that town properties do not have.
Getting to you
Fifteen minutes from our Belleville base in normal traffic, straight up the 401. There is no travel charge to anywhere in Quinte West, including Frankford, Batawa and the rural roads.
Emergency calls in Quinte West are typically under ninety minutes. Booked work is usually within the week.
Anything needing a utility disconnect and an ESA inspection — a panel upgrade or a service change — runs about two weeks from quote to certificate, same as everywhere else. That timeline belongs to the utility and the Electrical Safety Authority, not to us.
What comes up most here
Panel upgrades in the post-war housing, usually triggered by an insurer’s question or a plan to add air conditioning, an EV charger or a finished basement.
Aluminum wiring remediation in the mid-60s to mid-70s builds. If you have a house from that window and a faceplate that runs warm, that is the conversation.
Generator transfer switches on the rural properties. If you are on a well, an outage means no water as well as no light, and that changes the calculation.
Pre-purchase inspections, because military postings mean this is a market with a lot of movement, and a lot of people buying a house they have had one afternoon to look at.
Frankford and Batawa
Both are inside Quinte West and both are covered at the same rates.
Frankford has its own page — see Frankford — because the housing along the Trent River there is different enough to be worth its own conversation.
