What we see in Belleville homes
Belleville is our base, so this is where most of our work is and where we can usually be same-day. It is also the town that best explains why this company does what it does: the housing here spans roughly a hundred and forty years, and the electrical system in a house tells you almost exactly when it was built.
The heritage streets on Old East Hill and West Hill are the oldest of it — large brick homes, many of them from the 1870s through the 1920s. Houses in that bracket started life with knob and tube, and a good number still have some of it live in an attic or a ceiling void, spliced into newer work somewhere along the way. The ones that have been insulated without anyone checking the wiring first are the ones we want to hear about.
Between the wars and just after, the streets running back from the downtown core and the Moira filled in with smaller frame and brick houses. These typically came with 60 amp services, and a lot of them still have one. That is the size insurers ask about, and it is the size that will not carry an EV charger, a heat pump or a finished basement without a service change.
The post-war and 1960s subdivisions spreading north and east are a different problem. Bigger services, usually 100 amp, but this is also the era where aluminum branch wiring turns up — anything built or rewired from about 1965 to 1976. That is a remediation job rather than a rewire, and it is much cheaper than most people are quoted for it.
Then there is Thurlow and the outlying parts of the city — Foxboro and the rural roads north of the 401. More detached garages, more outbuildings, more wells, and a much stronger case for a generator transfer switch than anywhere in the city core has.
Getting to you
Belleville is where we are based, so same-day is normal here for anything urgent and within the week for booked work.
The exception is anything needing a utility disconnect or an ESA inspection — a panel upgrade, a service change, a new service to a garage. Those run on the utility’s calendar and the ESA’s, not ours, so figure roughly two weeks from quote to certificate no matter where in the city you are.
There is no travel charge anywhere in Belleville, including Thurlow and Foxboro.
What we get called for here most
Panel upgrades, by a distance. Usually triggered by one of three things: an insurer asking about a 60 amp service, a homeowner buying an electric vehicle, or a basement being finished.
Knob and tube, on the older streets. Almost always because of insurance, occasionally because someone opened an attic and did not like what they saw.
Aluminum wiring remediation, in the 1965 to 1976 housing. Most of these calls start with a warm faceplate.
Emergency calls, spread evenly across the whole city and heavily weighted toward storms.
The permit side
Notifiable work in Belleville goes to the Electrical Safety Authority like anywhere else in Ontario — the ESA is provincial, not municipal, so there is no separate city electrical permit to chase.
We file the notification, meet the inspector, and hand you the Certificate of Inspection at the end. It is in the price we quote. If you are also doing structural work, that is a separate City of Belleville building permit and a different process.
Before this page is published
Needs from the client: one completed Belleville job with before-and-after photos and a real timeline, two or three reviews from customers in the city, and confirmation of the neighbourhood-level detail above. The housing-era observations are general to Ontario towns of this age — the client should correct them into what they actually see on these specific streets.
Also verify the population figure against the current Statistics Canada census, and confirm which utility serves which parts of the city.
