EV Charger Installation in Belleville
Level 2 chargers for garages and driveways. Load calculation first, so you know before you buy whether your panel can carry it.
Conduit run visible, real install, not a product shot
Before you buy anything
The mistake we get called about most is a charger already sitting in the garage, in the box, bought before anyone checked whether the house could run it.
So the order that saves money is: load calculation, then quote, then buy the charger. It takes us about twenty minutes at your panel and it is free.
Two houses on the same street can get completely different answers. A 1990s build with a 200 amp service and gas heat has room to spare. A 1960s bungalow on 100 amp with electric baseboard, an electric range and an electric dryer often does not — and there is no way to know which one you have by looking at the driveway.
What the work involves
A Level 2 charger runs on a 240 volt circuit, the same kind of supply as an electric range or a dryer, at 30 to 60 amps depending on the unit.
The job is:
- Load calculation, and a decision on circuit size
- A new breaker in the panel
- Cable run from the panel to where the car parks — through the basement, along a joist bay, in conduit on a garage wall, or buried if it’s a detached garage
- The charger mounted, connected, and tested
- ESA notification filed, inspection booked
Three to six hours on site for most installs. Your power stays on the whole time apart from a few minutes at the panel.
Local note — needs client input
Real detail here: which local subdivisions have detached garages that need a buried run, what the frost depth means for that trench in this area, whether a particular era of Belleville build put the panel at the far end of the basement from the driveway.
What moves the price
Distance from the panel to the car. This is the single biggest factor. A panel on the garage wall is a $950 job. A panel in a basement at the opposite corner of the house from a detached garage is a $2,100 job, and most of the difference is cable and labour, not parts.
Whether the run is exposed or concealed. Surface conduit in a garage is quick. Fishing cable through a finished wall so nothing shows is slower.
Detached garage. If there’s no existing sub-panel out there, the trench and the feeder are their own small job.
Circuit size. A 60 amp circuit needs heavier cable than a 40 amp circuit. Most people are better served by 40 — it charges any current EV overnight and it eats less of your service capacity.
Whether your service needs upgrading first. That’s a separate job at a separate price. See panel upgrades.
Level 1 vs Level 2 — the honest version
Level 1 means plugging into an ordinary 120 volt outlet. It adds roughly 6 to 8 kilometres of range an hour, so about 60 to 80 kilometres overnight.
If you drive to Trenton and back for work, that is already more than you use in a day. Plenty of people in this region genuinely do not need a Level 2 charger, and we will tell you that rather than sell you one.
Level 2 is worth it if you drive long distances regularly, run two EVs, have a plug-in hybrid with a small battery you deplete daily, or simply want the car full every morning without thinking about it.
If you go Level 1, still get the outlet checked. A charger drawing 12 amps continuously for eight hours on a shared basement circuit from 1965 is exactly the sort of load those circuits were never designed for.
Rebates
There have been federal and provincial programs for home charger installs at various points, and they change. Some have ended.
We are not going to list a program on this page and have you find out at the till that it closed last year. Ask us when you call and we will tell you what is actually open at that moment, or point you at where to check.
Common questions
Can my panel handle a Level 2 charger?
That is the first thing we check and it is not a guess. A load calculation adds up what your house already draws and compares it to your service size. A 200 amp service with gas heat almost always has room. A 100 amp service with electric heat, a range and a dryer often does not. We do the calculation before quoting, and if the answer is no we tell you before you have paid us anything.
What if the answer is no?
Two options. Upgrade the service, which is a bigger job and a bigger bill — see panel upgrades. Or fit an energy management system, which watches the whole-house load and throttles or pauses the charger when the dryer and the oven are both running. That is often the cheaper answer and it is fully code-compliant. Which one is right depends on the numbers, not on preference.
How fast will it actually charge?
A Level 2 charger on a 40 amp circuit adds roughly 30 to 40 kilometres of range an hour, so an overnight charge covers a normal day of driving several times over. A standard wall plug — Level 1 — adds around 6 to 8 kilometres an hour. For most people driving around Belleville and Quinte West, Level 1 is genuinely enough. We will say so if it is.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger?
Yes. A new 240 volt circuit is notifiable work, so a notification goes to the Electrical Safety Authority, an inspector checks it, and you get a Certificate of Inspection. It is in our price. It also matters more than people expect — some insurers ask about it after a garage fire, and an uninspected DIY circuit is a bad conversation to have then.
Should I buy the charger or should you?
Buy it yourself if you have a preference — most people do, and the vehicle manufacturer's unit is usually fine. Tell us the model before we quote so we size the circuit correctly. If you would rather we supplied it, we will, at cost plus our time. We do not mark chargers up and we do not have a brand we push.
